We're excited to announce that Jade Umstead, criminology and justice studies '23, has been awarded a 2023 Boren Scholarship. The Boren Awards recognize students who demonstrate strong academic achievement and commitment to language study in regions critical to U.S. national interests. Jade will be studying Mandarin in Taiwan this summer and fall. Congratulations, Jade!

Jade Umstead is a fourth-year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in criminology and justice studies with a focus in justice informatics, a minor in Asian studies, and is working towards achieving a language certificate in Korean. Upon graduating, Jade hopes to become a data analyst for the federal government. In the fall of 2021, she studied abroad in South Korea at Seoul National University. While in Korea, Jade participated in the Korean Language Program, gained first-hand knowledge about comparative justice systems, and explored the fashion districts. This upcoming summer and fall of 2023, Jade will study Mandarin in Taiwan through the National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarship. Jade is looking forward to improving her language proficiency, learning about Taiwan’s history, and traveling throughout the greater Asia-Pacific region.

Jade has been involved in the Pennoni Honors College as a 2020 STAR Scholar and a 2020-21 Aspire Scholar.

The Boren Awards, an initiative of the National Security Education Program (NSEP), fund undergraduate and graduate US citizens to study less commonly taught languages in world regions that are critical to U.S. national security and underrepresented in study abroad. The awards promote long term cultural and linguistic immersion in countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren applicants are highly motivated individuals with an interest in serving in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren awardees commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
